Financial services company funds Small Business Development Center programming to support entrepreneurs and small business owners.
The UGA Small Business Development Center, a Public Service and Outreach unit of the University of Georgia, offers a signature education series for entrepreneurs called the SBDC StartSMART™ Program.
Through this programming, business owners who are close to launching a venture or have been open for less than two years can plan and analyze their vision with experienced SBDC facilitators who create a unique and powerful learning experience for participants. Each course includes a book and eight high-energy, interactive modules covered in four full-day sessions.
Each participant acquires marketing strategies, an actionable business plan, information on acquiring capital from banks and investors, and access to management tools and resources, and a network of entrepreneurial peers and professionals.
Thanks to statewide sponsor Wells Fargo, registrants can obtain tuition defrayments, making the already affordable program even more so. Wells Fargo funds StartSMART in six locations outside metro Atlanta and in 2016, expanded its support by donating $15,000 to help provide StartSMART sessions in the Atlanta area. It is also providing $10,000 to support the SBDC GrowSmart™ Program in Augusta, which is designed for business owners who are established and looking to rapidly expand their businesses.
“One of the pillars of the university’s mission is service to the state, and that includes helping foster growth and prosperity.”
Jere W. Morehead | President | University of Georgia
In 2015, Wells Fargo was the No. 1 Small Business Administration 7(a) lender in dollars and units, according to federal fiscal year-end data. Through its support of the SBDC’s programming, it is increasing its exposure to small business leaders while at the same time fostering economic development across the state of Georgia, a key element of UGA’s land-grant mission.
